“With BN, I discovered a place with shared experiences.”

“I found Black Nonbelievers in 2012 while searching for groups in the Orlando area. With BN, I discovered a place with shared experiences. Where my nonbelief was supported and encouraged.
Now as the organizer for Orlando BN chapter, I want to provide the same opportunity for others, and continue to build our community”.

– Barbara Page, BN Orlando’s newest organizer

If you are in the Orlando area, or even just visiting, check our BN Orlando! They are working on building a robust and exciting community that they want you to be part of. Find more info on their events at https://www.meetup.com/BN-of-Orlando/.

Playboy Coverage!?

I am so excited about all the news coverage that Black Nonbelievers has received lately. So excited, that I wanted to highlight some of it for you!

We were covered in the most recent article of The Humanist Magazine, as part of a feature on some of most effective and awesome black women in our movement. For just a taste of this article, the author explains how “they have pushed both black and white freethinkers to broaden their conceptions of humanism and have shown that despite arguments to the contrary, feminism is not only compatible with humanism but is also a central part of what it means to be a humanist.”

Black Nonbelievers also received exciting coverage in the July/August issue of Playboy Magazine! In a short excerpt, I detailed how “wildly disproportionate levels of violence, poverty and disease afflicting so many black communities, thoughts and prayers aren’t going to cut it.” After all, this is why all of our Black Nonbelievers leaders, members, volunteers, supporters, and chapters do what they do. All of you are the reason that I can share our organization’s success.

I am overjoyed to be see Black Nonbelievers being featured prominently in the media, and I hope that you are as excited about it as I am!

Black Nonbelievers of Cincinnati

Last year, we announced that a brand new Black Nonbelievers chapter was forming in Cincinnati, OH. I’m excited to report that the chapter not only started, but has gained a lot of momentum and is now very successful! But don’t just take my word for it, I am very happy to present the words of the chapter’s leaders directly.

“BN of Cincinnati is not only a resource for atheists of color in our area, we are a support system, a family. We celebrate together, grieve together and we even eat together. BN of Cincinnati has been the beginning and enrichment of many friendships.

Our first official MeetUp was in May 2018 at the local black owned restaurant Conscious Kitchen. We proudly displayed our BN of Cincinnati banner. In June, we’ll be having self defense classes with black owned Gye Nyame Martial Arts School. Our future MeetUps will include cookouts, laser tag, hiking and dinners and luncheons. And, of course, anything our members suggest.“

“One of the major conversations we had was about boldness.  I was sharing how I am compelled to speak up on personal issues that affect me and my community as it relates to religious over steps. As a member of a civil rights organization, I have recently stood up on a couple of occasions. The first occasion was a statewide meeting about education. The meeting was laced with religious overtones and eventually they asked me to pray over the food.  Even though I gave in which I later became very shamed about, I pulled the convener to the side and explained my position. I was surprised to be met with a very receptive and apologetic energy.  The second was about Christian prayers to start our local meetings. I realized this was an opportunity to shine the light on the fact that we shouldn’t not be giving preferences to any religion and that our organization was started by a collection of people, one of which was a secular humanist.  Since then, prayer has stopped in the Cincinnati meetings.

Watch us grow!”

– Triegg Turner

I hope that you are as excited as I am to see the fantastic success of Black Nonbelievers of Cincinnati. If you are in the area, or if you visit the city for any reason, reach out and get involved!
